There’s something so soothing about taking a moment to slow down and sip something warm and golden. A turmeric latte, also known as ‘golden milk’ is comforting, anti-inflammatory and oh-so warming. It’s very common in India but is becoming increasingly popular in western cultures too. It’s a like a hug in a mug and so easy to make yourself at home.
The benefits of Turmeric
Turmeric’s active compound curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
The black pepper is a key ingredient, as it contains piperine, which significantly increases the body’s ability to absorb curcumin
When combined with warming spices like cinnamon and ginger, it helps to calm, comfort and uplift.
Golden Milk Latte Recipe
Ingredients (serves 1)
- 1 cup of your favourite milk (almond, oat and coconut work beautifully if you don’t drink cows milk)
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground ginger (or a small piece of fresh ginger)
- A pinch of black pepper (helps your body absorb curcumin)
- ½ tsp coconut oil or ghee (optional, adds richness and helps absorption)
- 1 tsp maple syrup or honey (optional, to taste)
How to make the turmeric latte
- Gently warm your milk in a small pan over low to medium heat
- Whisk in your turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and black pepper until combined
- Add in your optional coconut oil or ghee, stirring until everything is well blended and steaming (don’t let it boil)
- Sweeten with honey or maple syrup to taste
- Pour into your favourite mug and sprinkle with a little cinnamon or nutmeg
- Enjoy!
This also works perfectly in the Hotel Chocolat The Velvetiser, which is my preferred method of making this.
